Did you know the most common disease among Oklahoma school children is tooth decay?

In fact, cavities affect 50% of first-graders, 71% of third-graders and 80% of 17-year-olds.

Dental disease leads to problems with kids’ eating, sleeping and concentration in school. Ultimately, a child’s achievement in the classroom is impacted directly by his or her dental health.

That’s why On the Cusp is joining the fight against dental disease by supporting a new state-wide effort called “Back to School with a Healthy Smile”.

This is a one-day event where over 140 Oklahoma dentists will provide free dental screenings at their offices for elementary-aged children, just weeks before they go back to school.

“As a pediatric dentist, this program is near and dear to my heart,” says Dr. Ryan Roberts.

“We see the effects of poor oral health on our children first-hand, every day. So we’re excited about helping kids start the school year off on the right track.”

The free screenings are being provided Wednesday, July 31st.

In addition to the free exam, all children will receive a free admission ticket to the Oklahoma Aquarium.

The goal of this all-volunteer effort is to help parents understand their child’s current dental health — and also boost academic performance in schools across the state.

Our mission is to see at least 60 children on July 31st.
